Before You Go: Essential Travel Prep for Malaysia
Documents You Must Have
Passport: Make sure it’s valid for at least 6 months after your trip ends.
Visa: Check if your nationality requires one — many don’t for short stays. Please check here: https://www.imi.gov.my/index.php/en/main-services/visa/visa-requirement-by-country/
Travel Insurance: Always a good idea — covers health issues, delays, and lost items.
Backups: Keep both digital and paper copies of your passport, visa, insurance, flight tickets, and hotel bookings.
Health & Safety Must-Dos
Vaccinations: Recommended ones include Hep A & B, Typhoid, and Tetanus.
Medications: Bring your own plus a basic first aid kit.
COVID-19 Essentials: Face masks, hand sanitiser, and any needed test/vaccine proof.
Money Matters
Currency: The Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). Bring some cash for small purchases.
Cards: Credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Inform your bank before travelling.
Budget Wisely: Plan for transport, food, attractions, and souvenirs.
What to Pack
Clothing: Think lightweight and breathable for hot, humid weather. Add a raincoat or umbrella during monsoon season.
Shoes: Comfy walking shoes are a must.
Swimwear: For beaches, pools, or resorts.
Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to beat the heat.
Tech & Connectivity
Power Adapter: Malaysia uses Type G plugs (UK-style), 240V. Remember to bring an international adapter for convenience.
Chargers + Power Bank: Don’t forget them!
SIM Card: Get a local SIM for internet and calls.
Translation Apps: Malay is the main language, but English is commonly used.
Cultural Tips
Respect Local Customs: Dress modestly in temples and mosques.
Tipping: Not expected, but a small tip is always appreciated.
Safety: Stay alert in busy areas and keep valuables secure.
🌟 Bonus Tips:
- Download the Grab app — the country’s most popular e-hailing service for convenient rides, food delivery, and more
Stay hydrated in Malaysia’s tropical weather.
Try the street food — it’s part of the experience! Just stick to busy, reputable stalls.
Be open, polite, and ready to explore — Malaysians are known for their hospitality.
